About Lucretia J. Mclaughlin:
Obituary for Mrs. George Wilson from Sparta,
IL newspaper, Thurs. Sept 9, 1926:
Death
brings end wedded life of sixty years
Mrs. George Wilson passed away at her
home early Wednesday. The Grim Reaper
stalked into the home of Mr. & Mrs.
George Wilson on West Third Street at
12:50 o’clock Wednesday morning
and terminated a marital union of almost
60 years standing when Mrs. Wilson succumbed
to a clot on the brain. She had been
ill only since Saturday evening, and
on last Friday had attended a birthday
celebration in honor of her husband
at the home of Mr. & Mrs. George
Chambers south of town.
Had Mrs. Wilson lived until Oct. 23rd,
she would have observed her sixtieth
wedding anniversary. Plans for the celebration
were well under way when interrupted
by death.
Funeral services will be held at the
residence at 2 o’clock this afternoon
and interment will be made in the family
lot in Union Cemetery. Rev. D. M. Conn,
Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church
will conduct the services.
Mrs. Wilson was a native of Randolph
county and spent most of her life in
this vicinity. She was born at Mill
Creek, near the Jackson county line,
on Nov. 8, 1849 and therefore was aged
76 years 10 months at the time of her
death. She was a daughter of Mr. &
Mrs. James McLaughlin, pioneer residents
of the south part of the county.
On Oct. 23, 1866, just at the close
of the Civil War, she was united in
marriage at the home of her parents,
to George Wilson, who still survives.
They resided on a farm in Jackson county
for six years and then moved to the
farm south of town now occupied by Phillip
Weber, where they resided until sixteen
years ago when they moved to their home
in Sparta. To this union were born eleven
children, four of them preceded their
mother in death.
Surviving are four sons, Henry of Wells,
Neb., Don & Waldo of Milwaukee,
WI., & Logan of St. Louis, and three
daughters, Mrs. John Davison of Shreveport,
LA., Mrs. George Chambers and Mrs. Steve
Candler of this city. All of the children
are here for the funeral, except Henry,
who wired that he would be unable to
make the trip. Miss Ella Chambers, a
student nurse at St. Louis, was at her
grandmother’s bedside Tuesday
and returned for the funeral today.
Miss Ruth Chambers, who teaches in the
Chester school, is also home for the
funeral.
