OBITUARY:
DR. LOCKWOOD PASSES AWAY EARLY TODAY
Well Known Physician Dies at Home After
Illness of Three Months.
Dr. Charles R. Lockwood, well known physician
of this city, died at his residence, 195
N. Greenwood Ave this morning after an illness
of three months. Charles Richard Lockwood
was born near Herscher in 1876 and came
to Kankakee with his parents in 1886. He
was married in 1908 to Hester Taylor, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Taylor of Omaha, Neb.
Mrs Lockwood died in 1911, leaving one daughter,
Hester, now 14 years of age. Dr. Lockwood
remarried in 1915, the bride being Miss
Elsie Curry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.O.
Curry of Chicago.
Dr. Lockwood is survived by his wife, three
children - Hester, Elsie, 7 years old, and
Betsey Rebecca, 3 years old also by his
mother, Mrs Charles Lockwood, all of Kankakee;
and one brother, George E. Lockwood of Chicago.
Was
An Eye Specialist.
Dr. Lockwood was a graduate of the Chicago
College of Physicians and Surgeons and made
eye, ear and nose diseases a specialty.
He was a Member of the American Medical
Association and of the Illinois State and
the Kankakee County Medical Societies. At
the time of his death he was president of
the Kankakee Kiwanis club Past Exalted Ruler
of the B.P.O.E and a member of the Masonic
Lodge No. 389 Kankakee.
He was a veteran of the world war serving
with distinction in one of the medical units.
He belonged to the American Legion post
in Kankakee. Dr. Lockwood was interested
in athletics to a marked degree and was
to be found regularly at the YMCA gymnasium,
seemingly in the best of physical condition
up to the time of his illness. He was greatly
beloved by all who came in contact with
him and was in all respects an exemplary
citizen.
Funeral Monday.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m.
from the Masonic temple and the body will
be laid to rest in Mound Grove cemetery
with Masonic honors.
The remains will lie in state at the Phillips
and Friday funeral parlors from 7 to 9 p.m.
today. on Sunday they will be taken to the
residence, and to the Masonic temple at
noon on Monday, to lie in state until the
hour of the funeral. The services will be
conducted by the Rev. G.H. McClung assisted
by Rev. J.P. Givens.
FUNERAL
OF DR. LOCKWOOD HELD THIS AFTERNOON
The funeral of the late Dr. Charles Richard
Lockwood was held this afternoon from the
Masonic temple and was attened by a large
concourse of people. The Kiwanis club of
which Dr. Lockwood was a president at the
time of his death was present in a body.
The body was taken to the temple from the
residence at 11:45 this morning, escorted
by the Kiwanis club. The funeral service
was held at 2 p.m. the Rev George H. McClung
officating, assisted by the Rev. J.P. Givens.
The pallbears were W.C. Schneider, Dr. A.N.
House,Dr. E.S. Hamilton, J. Bert Miller,
W.R. Hickox and W.A. Schneider
The remains were buried in Mound grove cemetery
with Masonic honers. An autopsy on the body
of Dr. Lockwood which was held Saturday
by Dr. Irwin at Phillips & Friday's
morgue to determine the cause of his death.
It revealed that it was a tumor on the brain.
Dr. Lockwood carried both life and accident
insurance. A $5000 policy in the latter.
He fell on an icy pavement last winter striking
his head which disabled him for some time.
Later he was stricken with paralysis. It
was to determine whether his death was due
to injuries from the fall, which would have
made the accident insurance collectable,
or from the other causes that led to the
autopsy.
He graduated from grammar school, Jun 10,
1891 in Kankakee. He graduated from Shattuck
Military School in Fairbault, MN. He was
stocky in stature, he played center on the
military football team.
He graduated from the University of MI.
at Ann Arbor, MI., where he also played
football. He was a member of Phi Rho Sigma
fraternity.
He graduated from the college of Physicians
and Surgeons, University of IL, Chicago,
IL, on May 20, 1902. He also studied in
Vienna, Austria.
Richard's first practice as a physician
was in Atwood, IL.
He entered the service as a captain in the
army in the World War. He was stationed
in the A.E.F. Medical Forces in Joue les
Tours, France.
He was a well-known eye, ear, nose, and
throat physician and surgeon in
Kankakee. He died at the age of 48 from
a brain tumor.
